A saguaro boot is actually a scab formed by the cactus when a

bird drills a hole for a nest.

It takes about a year for the scab to dry so that the parents can move in.

The boot is water proof and Indians have used them to carry water.

The scab is so tough that it remains long after the cactus has

died and decomposed.
