Great Black-backed Gull: an east

coast gull that weighs 4 pounds

and a 5′ wing span. They can

swallow a small duck or puffin

whole. (WB)

Barred Owl: Although at home in

Maine it’s considered invasive on

the west coast. The Great Plains

was void of trees until the fire

setting Tribes were displaced by

farming. Buffalo, elk, deer, and

beaver were extirpated. Trees in

the Great Plains invited the range

expansion.

Vermont. We birded northern New

Hampshire and Vermont on the tour.

hidden from view. Their Latin name

means small bird of the thornbushes.

2007 seen in a marsh in Indiana.

Machias Seal Island: Yes, the US

has a border dispute with Canada.

The border between Canada and

the US is the longest border

between two countries. The

lighthouse is manned by the

Canadian Coast Guard. In June

2018, US border patrol stopped 10

Canadian fishing boats in the area

looking for illegal immigrants.
